Hydraulic release bearings and mechanical clutch release bearings serve different clutch system designs. Hydraulic release systems are increasingly used in newer passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and heavy-duty applications, providing smoother operation, precise clutch engagement, and consistent performance throughout the service life of the clutch system.

What is a clutch release bearing?
It is the bearing that lets the clutch fork or hydraulic push rod press on the spinning pressure plate without metal-to-metal contact. When you push the clutch pedal, this bearing takes the load and allows the plate to keep turning while the release mechanism stays still. It is also called a release bearing, throw-out bearing, clutch bearing or clutch pressure bearing — all the same component.
What does a failing clutch release bearing sound like?
A chirp, squeal or rumble that appears when you press the clutch pedal and disappears when you release it. That pedal-dependent pattern is the giveaway — the bearing only spins when the clutch is disengaged. If the noise is present in neutral with the pedal up, look at the input shaft bearing instead. What causes a release bearing to fail early?
Clutch heat degrading the grease is the underlying mechanism, but riding the clutch is the biggest accelerator — holding the pedal part-down in traffic keeps the bearing loaded and spinning at high differential speed. Contamination from clutch dust or an oil leak, and misalignment from a worn fork, do the rest.
Should the release bearing be replaced with the clutch kit?
Yes, always. It is the cheapest part in the job and the most likely single reason a car comes back. Reusing an old release bearing behind a new clutch is false economy for the workshop and a warranty problem for whoever supplied the kit.
What is the difference between mechanical and hydraulic release bearings?
A mechanical release bearing is pushed by a fork or lever. A hydraulic one is pushed directly by fluid pressure through a push rod, with no linkage — giving smoother release and self-adjustment as the clutch wears. They are not interchangeable. Release Bearing Failure — Symptoms and Causes

Release bearings announce themselves before they fail, which is useful: a distributor who can tell a counter customer what to listen for sells the right part first time. Here is what to listen for and why it happens.

Symptoms

Chirp or squeal with the pedal down The classic release bearing symptom. The bearing only spins when the clutch is disengaged, so a noise that appears when the pedal is pressed and disappears when released points here — not to the gearbox.
Rumble that changes with pedal position Grease has broken down or washed out and the raceway is running dry. Usually terminal within a few thousand kilometres.
Grabbing or juddering engagement The bearing is binding on the input shaft sleeve rather than sliding freely. Often mistaken for a worn clutch disc.
High or vague pedal On mechanical systems, the bearing face has worn and taken up free play. On hydraulic systems, check for seal leakage first.
Noise that vanishes in neutral If pressing the pedal in neutral silences it, the release bearing is the likely source rather than the input shaft bearing.

Root Causes

Clutch heatThe bearing sits next to a friction surface. Heat degrades the grease, and once the grease goes the seal follows.
Riding the clutchHolding the pedal part-down in traffic keeps the bearing loaded and spinning at high differential speed — the single biggest cause of early failure.
ContaminationDust from the clutch disc and any oil leak from the crankshaft seal or gearbox input shaft get into the bearing.
MisalignmentA worn fork, bent lever or incorrect sleeve wears the bearing face unevenly.
Fitting without replacingReusing an old release bearing with a new clutch kit is false economy — it is the cheapest part in the job and the most likely to bring the car back.
