Generation 1, 2 or 3 — Which Wheel Bearing Do You Need?

Wheel hub bearings are grouped into three generations. Which one a vehicle takes depends on how the bearing mounts to the knuckle and whether the hub and flange are integrated. TP supplies all three.

Generation 1

Wheel Bearing

A sealed double-row unit — pressed into the steering knuckle. The hub and flange are separate components. Lowest unit cost, highest volume; requires a press to fit.

gen1
Generation 2

Wheel Bearing

The outer ring carries an integrated mounting flange, so the bearing bolts directly to the hub or knuckle. Fewer parts and faster fitting than Gen 1, with better retained preload.

gen2
Generation 3

Wheel Hub Assembly

Bearing, hub, flange and — where specified — the ABS encoder ring come as one bolt-on assembly. No press required and preload is set at the factory. Repair kits also available.

gen3

Looking for complete hub assemblies rather than bearings? See Wheel Hub Assembly. For heavy commercial vehicles, see Truck Bearings & Hub Units.

Applications

Wheel bearings support vehicle weight while allowing wheels to rotate smoothly and efficiently. As a critical safety-related component, wheel bearing performance directly affects driving stability, ride comfort, noise levels, and rolling resistance. Reliable sealing performance and precise clearance control are essential to ensure long service life under different operating conditions.

TP supplies more than 200 wheel bearing and wheel bearing kit references, including ball bearing and tapered roller bearing designs with rubber seals, metal seals, and ABS magnetic encoder seals. The range covers European, North American, Japanese, and Korean vehicle applications and is exported to customers in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Products are available for passenger cars, pickups, buses, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, and agricultural vehicles, supporting both OEM-related programs and aftermarket distribution. TP also provides application matching, customization support, quality documentation, warranty solutions, and technical assistance for global distributors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a wheel bearing last?
Service life depends far more on operating conditions than on the bearing itself. Sealing performance, grease quality, load, road conditions and installation accuracy all shorten or extend it. In normal passenger-car service a quality wheel bearing is generally expected to run well beyond 100,000 km, but heavy loads, water ingress and incorrect press-fitting are the usual causes of early failure. For distributors this matters commercially: seal design and grease specification are where warranty return rates are decided.
What is the difference between Generation 1, 2 and 3?
Gen 1 is a sealed bearing pressed into the knuckle, with hub and flange separate. Gen 2 integrates a mounting flange into the outer ring so it bolts on. Gen 3 combines bearing, hub, flange and — where specified — the ABS encoder into a single bolt-on assembly. See the comparison above. TP supplies all three, plus hub assembly repair kits.
Do you supply bearings with ABS encoder seals?
Yes. Magnetic encoder seals are available for the references that require them. When you enquire, give us the OE number — encoder pole count and polarity are platform-specific and must be matched exactly, not substituted.
What is your MOQ and lead time?
MOQ is typically 50–200 pcs per reference depending on the part and packaging. Lead time depends on whether the reference is in stock at our Shanghai logistics centre or scheduled for production, and whether we ship from China or Thailand. Send us your reference list and we will quote MOQ and lead time per line.
Can you produce to our OE numbers or under our own brand?
Yes — OEM and ODM are both supported, including private-label packaging and non-standard designs. Our technical centre handles drawing confirmation before production starts. Send a drawing or a sample and we will confirm feasibility.
Can I test samples before placing a bulk order?
Yes. Samples are available for testing before a production order. We recommend it for any new reference, particularly where sealing performance or encoder matching is critical to your market.
